it is the engineers and hydrologists and all those technical experts whose highly scientific interference with the forces of nature that plunged parts of Bihar into the depths of an angry Kosi. the long term conseqences of the actions of technical experts have been seen before and will be seen again and again and yet our faith in them never diminishes. it is like superstition. we don't understand so we tell ourselves, no need to make the effort to understand, to join the debate, just let the 'experts' handle things.

 

the problem with many 'great experts' is that they see only the part that they are intersted in and not the whole that should be kept in mind when designing projects and implementing them. this approach is narrow. but everywhere this approach is hailed like the greatest good. you will find everyone tell you behave like arjun, like arjun saw only the eye of the fish, you look only at the dam you are building, not the right bank which may dry up or the downstream where the river may turn into a trickle and fester and prodce diseases ... if you saw only the eye of the whale while swimming in the ocean you would end up in its stomach. but nobody wants to go beyond that cliche of expertise and their narrow focal points.

 

if you would only read some articles in journals and newspapers instead of spending all your energies just vilifying some people (depending on your bias) we could have a more meaningful discussion. you have of course never heard that all corrections to the distortions of professions come from outside. history has proven this many times. it is the reader who corrects the newspapers, the viewer who points out flaws to the tv channels, the patient who teaches the doctor that there is more to diagnosis and medicine than what books teach and so on and so forth.........
