What surprises me most is the pretence of the leftists that India was always a sovereign state with independent decision making people at the helm.
From the Nehru era till Narasimha Rao era, it was the Soviets who ruled India de facto with Nehru and Indira as puppets. Then the US took over in the guise of World bank to bail out the ailing economy and thrust Manmohan singh , who was a rank outsider into the government. This was the state of the government then.
Coming to the parties, it was the lefties who were most under outside influence. Mitrokhin, the former Soviet KGB chief , in his '
Mitrokhin Archives ' has allocated 75 pages to India and the Soviet influence on India. The primary conduit for Soviet intrusion was the Left movement in India.
The whole country laughed at the Communists when they , holding the government virtually under their whip, preferred to hold rallies and shouted till throats got dry when the oil prices were raised. They could have pulled the 'anti poor' government down but did not. They got so used to be under the limelight and surrounded by the press and they liked it when the whole ruling establishment danced to their tune. They wanted the cake and eat it too !
They did not want the pact because it will antagonise their favourite China. The second astonishing reason given by them is that the Muslims did not like it ! Funny people, it was good that they left the congress (and the country) off their hook.
But I will not be surprised if there is a hung parliament, they will again extend external support to Congress for another episode of sadistic drama of governance.
